The 10-minute table reset after school

The first few minutes after school can be louder than expected. A child arrives hungry, tired, full of stories, or not ready to talk at all. It is tempting to move straight into homework, bathing or the next activity. A short reset at the table can make the afternoon feel easier to enter.

Begin with a landing spot

Pick one place where the school bag always goes. Then let your child choose a small next step: a drink, a snack, or five quiet minutes with paper and pencils. The order does not have to be perfect. What matters is that it is familiar.

Malaysia's early-childhood programmes recognise that learning happens across social, emotional and physical parts of a child's day. Home routines can support that same sense of safety without turning the afternoon into another lesson.

Ask one gentle question

Instead of asking "How was school?" the minute they walk in, try one question that is easier to answer: "What made you laugh today?" or "Which part was the hardest?" Some days you may only get a shrug. That is fine. The question still tells your child there is room to talk when they are ready.

For younger children, drawing, building blocks or sorting stickers can do the same job. Their hands are busy, so the conversation does not feel like an interview.

Keep homework in its own lane

When it is time for schoolwork, choose one small piece first. UNICEF's current positive-parenting guidance suggests breaking tasks into smaller, manageable steps and pairing routine with encouragement. That can mean opening the book together, reading one instruction, then taking a short break before the next part.

The aim is not to finish everything in ten minutes. It is to make starting feel less heavy.

End with tomorrow in mind

Before the table is cleared, take one minute to put the bag, water bottle or a note for school in the same place. This tiny finish gives tomorrow's morning less to solve.

The reset will not make every afternoon calm. But it gives your child a soft place to land between school and home, and gives the whole family a more predictable next step.
